When Kim asked me to design a stitched item on the theme of ‘Feathers’, I knew I wanted to use this cute chap with his fabulous tail feathers. And, as it is nearly Easter, little egg cosies seemed the perfect project for our first challenge.

Use 1cm seams throughout project
Method
Print off the egg cosy pattern and then cut two pieces each of your outer fabric, lining fabric and wadding.

Next trace the cockerel pieces onto the bondaweb and then fuse to your choice of coloured fabrics following manufacturers’ instructions. Centre the cockerel on the front cosy piece and fix with your iron. At this point your design will look a little bland but don’t panic!

Looking good!
Set your machine to a reduced stitch length and, using black thread, carefully sew around the pieces to add definition and secure them into place.

Now make a tab from a folded strip of your lining fabric and pin it to the middle of your appliquéd front piece. Kim has also some gorgeous grosgrain ribbons in stock which would look equally as lovely.
Next simply place the front and back pieces together, right sides facing and pop them on top of the two wadding pieces to create a ‘sandwich’, then stitch to form the main body of the cosy.

Do the same with the lining pieces, but don’t forget to leave a gap so that you can turn the cosy right side out when it’s finished!

Take the lining and place it inside the outer cosy, right sides together, then stitch all the way around the bottom edge.

Okay, we’re nearly there! Turn the cosy through the gap that you left in the lining, so that it will looks like this;

Finally hand stitch the little gap closed, tuck the lining inside the cosy, and that’s it! Now all you have to do is sit back and admire your gorgeous new egg cosy!
